The township of Margaret River itself is located right in the middle of the Margaret River region which stretches from Cape Naturaliste in the north to Cape Leeuwin in the south.
The small township has always had an appealing, mesmerizing characteristic which has attracted people to the region for many years. In the early days it was backpackers, surfers and hippies drawn to the region for the fabulous surf and deserted beaches or the tall forests, but as the attraction grew Margaret River attracted a more affluent visitor looking for a lifestyle change and the pleasures the region has to offer.
While the region is home to over 120 wineries, Margaret River township is the centre of commerce and activity and a bustling mixture of old and new where tourists wander the mainstreet shops, cafes and restaurants.
As the name indicates, the town is positioned on the Margaret River and is about 8km from the ocean. Where the river meets the ocean you will find Surfers Point, famous as the main surf setting for the movie Drift as well as the for hosting the Margaret River Pro surf competition. The little town here is called Prevelly.
Around Margaret River are numerous attractions, a meandering river will swimming holes and waterfalls, great mountain biking and walking tracks, historic buildings and rammed-earth homes, fields full of kangaroos, wineries with fabulous restaurants and cellar doors, fishing, camping – the list is long, but the options are endless.
