The town of Harvey sits on the South Western Highway, about 40km before Bunbury and 15km inland and is home to dairy farms, horticulture, viticulture, beef production, orange orchards and mining.
Located upon the Harvey Dam and Harvey River, the region is very fertile and has had a long history dating back to the mid-1800’s and provides a rich heritage of period buildings and life in the south west.
The history includes an internment camp set up during World War II to house Italian and German immigrants who were classified as enemies by the allies. This period captures a rather unusual and difficult time for both the local people and the foreigners, and is an interesting precursor to the later multicultural country Australia has developed in to.
